Schools go green by collecting used Christmas cards!

14 April

Following the festive season, 20 Newham schools participated in a competition to see who could  collect the most unwanted Christmas cards which could then be recycled and therefore diverted from landfill. The schools really got stuck in, with over 1 tonne of cards being collected!

The winning school, St Anthony’s Primary school in Forest Gate, collected a fantastic 229kg (almost half a kg per pupil) and won a £100 Marks and Spencer’s voucher in addition to a £100 cheque from  Newham Council. They can be seen below receiving their well deserved prizes!

A big ‘well done’ should also go out to New City and Nelson Primary Schools, who came second and third, respectively collecting 158kg and 118kg.

The success of the ‘Christmas Card Recycling Collection 2010’ goes to show that by recycling old Christmas Cards rather than just throwing them away, we can all really make a difference to the environment!
