East London residents challenged to Love Food Hate Waste

29 September

Recycle for your Community are challenging East London residents to keep a food waste diary for one week in a bid to highlight the problem of food waste.

We throw away £8.3m worth of food every year, most of which could have been eaten. That’s an astonishing £680 wasted each year by an average family - money spent on food they do not eat.

Recycle for your Community will be supporting residents to save time and money by helping people perfect their portion sizes, learn to love their freezers, shop smartly, and create quick and delicious recipes using leftovers.

Participants will receive a personalised Food Waste Prevention Pack, filled with advice, tips, recipes and goodies. Individually designed to suit you and your family, saving money and helping the environment. You can also look out for roadshows throughout the boroughs or book a talk for your local community group to meet our food waste experts first hand.

To take up the challenge download our Food Waste Challenge Diary or contact Libi at libi.jardine@wastewatch.org.uk or on 07891 815 099.

For tips and advice you can also visit www.lovefoodhatewaste.com which is bursting with recipe ideas, top tips and cunning shortcuts to help make the most of the food you buy.

Here are our top five tips:

Plan: Plan your meals and make a shopping list so you only buy what you need
Freeze: Next time you cook, make double the quantity and freeze the extra portion for a healthy, convenient ‘ready meal’
Measure: Ensure you don’t cook to much by checking the portion calculator at www.lovefoodhatewaste.com
Store: Store food properly to extend its life. Your fridge should be between 1-5 degrees and you should keep an eye on use by dates!
Create: Learn to use leftovers creatively. If your bananas are going black, why not blitz them into a smoothie, or freeze them and add to cake batter or muffin mix next time you’re baking?
