Recycle Week 2010 - Declutter your e-clutter!
18th June
Has your kettle run out of steam? Is your TV facing the final credits?
Many of us already recycle everyday items such as newspapers, cans and plastic bottles but did you know that old unused electrical items can have a second life??
Recycle Week 2010 runs from 21st to 27th June and this year focuses on small electrical items. That means anything with a battery or plug: broken toasters and kettles gathering dust in the loft, old mobile phones in drawers or disused power tools cluttering up the garage.
On average we each buy three new electrical items each year – that’s 173 million nationally - but we find it hard to let them go, as only one in five of our small electricals gets recycled. Broken electrical items contain valuable materials such as silver that can be used again saving precious new resources. Plastic and metal parts can also be made into new items, such as yoghurt pots and tin cans! Many electricals that are disused after an upgrade could even find a new home elsewhere.
Campaign organiser Jane Hall, from Recycle Now said: “Recycle Week is a great opportunity to remind us just how easy it is to reduce, reuse or recycle. This year, why not give your old electricals a new lease of life? Visit www.recyclenow.com today to find out how your old electricals can be recycled into something new, or even donated to charity and given a new home.”
