Group learns to waste less during Interfaith Week

07 January

To celebrate Interfaith Week 2010 (21 - 27 November), Recycle for your Community and Enterprise Plc. invited residents to take part in the food waste challenge in a bid to highlight the problem of food waste.

Food waste is a major issue and not just about good food going to waste; wasting food costs the average family with children £680 a year and has serious environmental implications too.

Hafsa Qutub (pictured, left) who attends Qur'ani Murkuz Trust Centre and mosque acted as community champion and in a coordinated effort with Enterprise Plc. and Recycle for your Community, conducted a presentation regarding the food waste challenge, followed by a short film about hunger and poverty called 'Chicken a la Carte.'

On a cold winter afternoon women from different nationalities gathered in the local mosque to support the Love food Hate Waste campaign which aims to raise awareness of the need to reduce the amount of food that we throw away, and how doing this will benefit us as consumers and the environment.

The sisters group were given tips on how to perfect their portion sizes, love their freezers, shop wisely, and create quick and delicious recipes using leftovers.

Upon submission of the Food Diary at the end of the week, participants received a goody bag and will also receive a personalised Food Waste Prevention Pack filled with advice, tips, recipes and goodies. The packs will be individually designed to suit each family, saving them money and helping the environment.

Mrs. Rukhsana Zafar, the headmistress of the Qur'ani Murkuz Trust Centre girls section and in charge of the sisters section, attended the event and said: “The importance of this theme is perfectly highlighted in the holy Qur’an 7:31 ‘Eat and drink but DO NOT BE WASTEFUL: God does not like wasteful people’”.  She added, “On behalf of the QMT sisters section, I would like to thank Enterprise Plc., Recycle for your Community and sister Hafsa for the very informative session. We hope to continue to be involved in similar important endeavours in the future.”
