Competitions for Schools
29 October
Schools have had the opportunity to enter 3 challenging competitions this year.
Yellow Woods ChallengeA simple, educational and fun initiative for schools organised by Yellow Pages, the Woodland Trust and Havering Council. All schools need to do is recycle old Yellow Pages directories. More than 8,500 pupils from 22 schools in the borough joined the Yellow Woods recycling challenge, collecting 1,858 directories. Pupils from Rise Park Infants School collected 226 directories, which works out to 1.29 directories per pupil. The school came first, winning the top prize of £300. Ardleigh Green Junior School came in second, winning £200, while Squirrels Heath Junior School was in third place, winning £100.
Art Sculpture CompetitionPupils had their chance to show off their artistic talents by creating a sculpture of their choice using only materials that can be recycled in the borough's orange sacks. The James Oglethorpe Primary School was the eventual winner and they will receive the fantastic prize of a visit from an artist that will spend a day with the pupils undertaking a variety of exciting recycling workshops. 'Amy the Baby Rabbit' was the winning sculpture (pictured above).
Recycling Collection CompetitionThis competition is open to all schools that have the Shanks & Council recycling collection facilities. The competition ran during the month of June and will be based on the highest amount of recycled waste collected, measured by kg per head. The tonnages are currently being calculated and the winning schools will be announced shortly. Three fantastic waste minimisation prizes (a wormery, green cone and two monkey litter bins) are on offer for the top three performing schools.
