Charity Clothes Collections for Havering Primary Schools

Havering Council is very pleased to be working with the charity TRAID (Textile Recycling for Aid and International Development).

What is TRAID IT ON?
TRAID IT ON is a schools textiles collection and education scheme run by the clothes recycling charity TRAID (charity no 297489). All the money raised by schools participating in TRAID IT ON will fund international development projects.

How schools can help
TRAID work with thousands of children every year to encourage more clothes recycling. Schools can be agents of change ensuring that every pupil recycles and takes this message to their homes, families and communities. TRAID IT ON helps schools to reduce clothes waste and raise funds to fight global poverty at the same time.

TRAID IT ON works in five easy steps

1. TRAID delivers a fun and informative school assembly explaining the importance of textile recycling, how we can reduce waste and includes a short fashion show featuring 100% recycled clothes made by in house charity fashion label TRAIDremade.
2. TRAID provides pupils with recycling sacks and a leaflet to take home. Pupils fill the sack with unwanted textiles and shoes and return it to school on an agreed date.
3. TRAID collects the recycled clothing from schools on a designated day.
4. The class which recycles the most textiles wins a free clothes remaking workshop.
5. All the funds raised by schools participating in TRAID IT ON in 2009 will be donated to the sustainable development charity Excellent Development.

2. A3 Recycling Certificate
3. Excellent Development Schools Pack helping pupils understand how its sustainable development work improves lives, farming and water supplies in Kenya.

What happens to the textiles collected by pupils?
Textiles are brought to TRAID's warehouse in Wembley. After weighing, a team of experts hand sort the textiles checking for quality. The best is resold in our ten charity clothes shops, the rest is sold to wholesale.

What  happens to the funds raised?
TRAID is a charity and not a commercial textile recycler. All profits raised support TRAID's charitable objectives to fight global poverty, reduce waste and protect the environment. n 2009, the funds raised by schools taking part in TRAID IT ON will be donated to Excellent Development - an international development charity (1094478) working with disadvantaged communities in Africa to improve water supplies, food production, health and incomes.

The assembly
TRAID introduces the school to the problems of waste, the importance of textile recycling and the value of clothing. TRAID also talk about its clothes recycling operations, its international development work and in house recycled fashion label TRAIDremade to inspire pupils to TRAID IT ON and recycle their unwanted clothes and shoes.

The clothes workshop
The class that collects the most textiles win a free clothes remaking workshop. Pupils get the chance to be fashion designers with the TRAID Education Team guiding pupils to develop their creative talents and remaking techniques to produce a recycled garment.
